In the past, certain sporting codes such as boxing, rugby, soccer and karate were popular solely amongst men. Fortunately, this trend is changing as more and more women are conquering these sporting fields.

Lubanzi Dlamini, a female student boxer, was inspired to become a boxer while watching the South African actress Katlego Danke portraying a boxer.

Dlamini further explained that boxing makes her feel like a winner. She received a silver medal at the USSA’s under the 54kg category, best female bout and an award for most improved boxer in the previous UNIZULU sports awards.

Another student who is breaking the stereotype in another sporting code is Nonsikelelo Mpungose, a female rugby player who is also a co-captain of the team of Zululand with Portia Mkhwanazi.

Mpungose says rugby ‘found her’.

‘’People always ask me why rugby because it’s rough, well that’s exactly what I love about it ‘’ said Mpungose. Not only does she play a sport that is known to be a man’s sport but, one that is also painted for the wealthy elite.

Another emerging sport woman, Lusanda Zungu, who started playing Gold in 2016. She is one of the best golfers and is currently the chairperson of the UNIZULU’s Golf club.
