All Set for Science & Agriculture Faculty Research Symposium

The University of Zululand is gearing up to host the annual Faculty of Science and Agriculture Research Symposium where matters relating to the fields of science and agriculture will be discussed.

These include Botany, Bio Kinetics (including Sports Science and Human Movement Science), Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Consumer Sciences, Geography, Hydrology, Microbiology, Physics and Zoology. The conference provides an interactive space for knowledge sharing between specialised disciplines as well as discussions on their inherent connection and increased efforts when considered as a whole.

Professor Onisimo Mutanga from the University of KwaZulu-Natal will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Prof Mutanga is a full Professor and Academic Leader (Research) at UKZN’s School of Agriculture, Earth and Environmental Science. He completed his PhD on Hyperspectral Remote Sensing of Tropical grass quality and quantity at Wageningen University-ITC (Netherlands) in 2004.

The major success rating of the symposium over the years has been the effort and the support given to it by staff and students.

“We are hoping to try and motivate students to see that research is possible and that students must continue with their studies. An example is those at Honours level which we encourage to continue pursuing their Master’s degree. Our biggest aim is to promote research within the faculty,” said Professor Bolyn Mosa Selepe, a Senior Lecturer in the Consumer Science Department at UNIZULU.

The symposium will conclude with an award giving ceremony to presenters.

The event will take place as follows:

Date: Friday, 29 September 2017

Time: 8h30-15h00

Venue: LT Block Ground and first floor, KwaDlangezwa Campus (near Arts Faculty building)
