The 8^th March marks International Women’s Day, which is especially dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while also mobilising for the acceleration of gender parity.

The theme for this year was “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of United Nations Women, in her statement on International Women’s Day 2021, said that no country prospers without the engagement of women. “We need women’s representation that reflects all women and girls in all their diversity and abilities, and across all cultural, social, economic and political situations. This is the only way we will get real societal change that incorporates women in decision-making as equals and benefits us all,” she said.

The Director in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Professor Nontokozo Mashiya, conveyed a message to all the UNIZULU women, saying they are delighted to work with them. “Women are empowering, inspiring and are the ultimate motivator. They excel in every role they get to play in this world, from motherhood to employee and make it through the worst.  As we embrace the new year, let us forge forward and empower other women to reach their full potential and become stronger, better and successful in life. Identifying, celebrating and increasing visibility of women’s achievements can help improve equality in our work spaces,” she highlighted.

In her opinion, women and girls have made tremendous efforts around the world to shape a more equal future, ensure recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the gaps that remain where gender parity is concerned. She urged UNIZULU women to continue doing their best to make the world a better place for all women.

“Keep in mind that women’s full and effective participation and leadership in all areas of life drive progress for everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful and lovely women for their valuable contribution wherever it was much needed.” Prof Mashiya concluded.
