APPOINTMENT: Occupational Health and Safety Manager

The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) is delighted to announce the appointment of Siphiweyinkosi B. Mtshali, who assumed the Manager: Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) position in the Institutional Planning Department on 1 September 2019.
Mtshali reports directly to the Executive Director: Institutional Planning. His role encompasses supporting the OHS responsibilities of all units by assisting in the identification of hazards and implementation of risk controls, developing and communicating OHS policies, procedures and programmes to the University community as well as recording, analysing and reporting OHS performance metrics.
His decision to go into the field of OHS was inspired by the passing of his grandfather, who had contracted an occupational disease. Sadly, Mtshali’s family was never compensated by grandfather’s employer. Hence, he chose a career in health and safety to address this injustice.
Outlining what he envisions for OHS at UNIZULU in years to come, Mtshali said: “I envision UNIZULU acquiring certification for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and being an institution which strives to provide a safe and healthy work and educational environment for its students, employees, visitors and contractors.”
Mtshali’s leadership style is transformational as his focus is on influencing, inspiring, engaging and challenging all stakeholders. His mantra is “handle your business, before your business handles you”.
Mtshali is an avid runner who has a keen interest in sport
