The UNIZULU Science Centre ended the year 2017 on a high note, having reached a record number of 30 008 visitors during the course of the year.

“With schools closed and the goal agonisingly close, special public events this week ensured that the target was met a day before closing for the year,’ said UNIZULU Science Centre Director, Dr Derek Fish during late December. “Since its opening in 1986, more than half a million eager young science students have been entertained and educated at the centre,” said Dr Fish.

The UNIZULU Science Centre is aimed at Science educators and learners in KwaZulu-Natal schools surrounding the University of Zululand. The focal area stretches roughly from the Tugela River in the South to Kosi Bay in the North, and inland as far as Nongoma. It includes roughly a quarter of KZN’s education regions which contain about 550 secondary schools.

Sadly, the Centre bade farewell this year to founder member and renowned international scientist, author and lecturer, Alfred Tsipa who passed away in July 2017 after 20 years of faithful service at the Centre.

The Centre’s staff will continue to serve schools in the region in January (2018).
